For this post I will be talking about the similarities and differences between Matt from The House of The Scorpion and Vincent from Gattaca. The things I will be talking about will be that Matt tries to hide his genes because he is ‘unnatural’ and Vincent tries to hide his genes for the opposite reason, he wants to hide him not being perfect. Another thing is that Vincent in the end has no choice but to be someone else because otherwise he would be going agains everything he wanted, and Matt tried to be someone else. Something that they both wanted to do was to go above all expectations for Vincent he was outrunning most of the people on the treadmill even though he has a heard decease and was ten thousand beats overdue. Vincent also would always go swimming with his brother who was modified and would always lose. In the end on the movie Vincent swims farther than his brother and ends up saving him. In The House of The Scorpions, Matt is much smarter than any clone and in the end Matt took over Opium also without anyone’s help he ran away to the outside world with just a map.
In The House of The Scorpion Matt tries to be someone he is not and Vincent from Gattaca almost has no choice but to be someone else because all his life he wanted to be an astronaut but because of his heart decease he could never go into space, thats why he was trying to hide his identity and be a clone. In the end he becomes an astronaut and that was not his main concern anymore, but he has wanted that his whole life so he would contradict himself if he didn’t go into space. Matt on the other hand becomes El Patron and that is what he was hoping would happen to him the whole time so he essentially tried being someone else and succeeded. Overall both Matt and Vincent became what they wanted to be. Vincent became and astronaut and Matt become the ruler of Opium. They also both had to hide their identity and live their life pretending to be something they aren’t. Identity is who you are throughout this year we talked about how important identity is. To them I guess their goals were more important to them than being their own person.
